Friends vs Professional Movers: Save More Than Money When You Move

Has this happened to you? You get a call from a friend you haven’t heard from in months and they have a request that they “hate to ask.” But the upshot is that they want you to help them move this weekend.

Here are the pros and cons of hiring friends to help you with your relocation:

Pros

  • First, asking your friends to help with the move likely won’t cost you money. And if it does, they probably won’t cost as much as professional movers. Most friends (at least the good ones) will be willing to help move in return for some pizza or Chinese takeout and a couple of beers.

 

  • Another reason you might want to consider this option is that you’ll get to spend more time with your friends. Sure, you’ll all be working hard. But there’s something about the company of good friends that will help that time pass quicker than trying to go it alone.

 

  • Another unexpected consequence is that you tend to be safer when you have other people working with you. You are more likely to look out for the well-being of everyone so you won’t let anyone get hurt.

 

  • Finally, this option also allows for flexible time scheduling. In fact, you work out the timing with your friends and not around some business’s plan.

Cons

  • It can be hard to figure out exactly how many friends will show up and how many will say they have other plans.

 

  • You may also not know what your friends will be willing to do when they get there. (Will they help with boxes or are they going to be willing to help move that giant sofa?)

 

  • If something happens and one of your friends does get hurt, you’ll feel bad about that and it could end up hurting your friendship as well. (And, in some cases, insurance may have to get involved if they are hurt on your property.)

 

  • When you’re moving heavy objects, tempers can run as high as the temperatures. This could lead to arguments and hurt feelings between you and your friends.

 

  • You may find out you have a snooper in your friend group. Are you prepared to have all of your items looked at and fondled?

 

  • When hiring professional movers, you know you’ll be out of your old place and in your new home in a day. Friends don’t usually have the same sense of urgency. 

 

  • If a professional breaks something, their insurance will cover the item and replace it. But if your friend breaks something, there’s no coverage. You will simply have to hope that they will replace the item.

Saying Goodbye to Your Home: How to Make Your New House a Home

  1. Create a Scrapbook — Our memories have a strange way of warping over time. What we thought was true in our brain may not actually be the reality. One way to preserve the true memories of your old home is to create a scrapbook. You can save images digitally or you can print out the pictures professionally and then place them in a physical scrapbook. As you prepare to leave this home, make sure to document the move itself in pictures and record the empty rooms before you finally leave.

  2. Have a Going Away Party — Many people who move into a new home will have a house-warming party. But a better idea might be to have a party to say good-bye to the old house. Canada Relocation Move Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs

As you might guess, our moving company is presented with a lot of questions. Having been in the relocation business for over forty years, we have seen it all! Below are some of the most frequently asked moving questions with answers we hope you’ll find helpful.

Are moving companies members of a professional organization? 

If your moving company is legitimately operating in Canada (as opposed to a fly-by-night company), they should be members of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM). With this membership, the company agrees to abide by the regulations put forth by the CAM to protect customers and their belongings.

How much does a professional moving company cost? 

This is a hard one to answer because there are so many different factors that can affect the cost. Some moves are by the hour (usually for a short move) or by weight (for longer moves). Check out our detailed blog that can give you more specific information about the cost of a move. 

Is it possible to get a free in-home estimate? 

Absolutely. Contact us and we will send a customer service representative to inventory the items you want to be moved. Once we arrive, we’ll create a free estimate of how much we anticipate the move will cost. 

If you’d like to do this yourself, you can also use our Detailed Moving Estimate Form. During your in-home estimate, you can learn more about weight restrictions and other issues that may impact your move.

When can I schedule my move? 

Generally speaking, the earlier you plan your move, the better chances you will have to get your move scheduled exactly when you want. Overall, moving dates are based on availability. We recommend that you begin planning your move at least six to eight weeks before your anticipated move date.

When will my belongings be delivered? 

If you are scheduling a short-distance move, your belongings will be delivered that day. For long-distance moves, the representative will give you a detailed itinerary of when your items will be delivered.

Can I change my moving date? 

Sometimes, problems come up and we understand that. If your moving date changes, inform us as soon as possible to see if there are any scheduling conflicts that may prevent us from fulfilling the move.

Do you pack boxes, and will you provide the supplies for the move? 

Depending on your budget and needs, there are options. We can pack all of your items ourselves and then unpack them in your new home. This is a pricier option as it requires more crew members and more time.  Or we can simply pick up the boxes you have packed and then deliver them for you to unpack. Whether you plan to pack the boxes yourself or have us do this part, you can purchase boxes and other packing supplies directly from us.

Are there any items that you will not (or cannot) move? 

There are several types of items that we are forbidden by law to transport. For the most part, these include the following:

  • Gases and chemical propellants
  • Explosives and ammunition
  • Flammable items
  • Yard and gardening chemicals (such as fertilizers and pesticides)
  • Household chemicals
  • Corrosive items

What about my plants and pets? 

Unfortunately, we cannot move your pet for you. And we recommend that you don’t have them in your home on moving day. Moving can be stressful and we don’t want your pets getting hurt or upset as we try to move heavy items. 

Also, with people coming in and out of the home, it’s possible that your pets may get loose, and we wouldn’t want that to happen. It’s probably a good idea to get them boarded for a day or so during the move. 

As for plants, we recommend that you transport those yourself in your vehicle. The temperature in moving vans may not be conducive for plants and we would not want to damage them during transit.

Are there any items I should move? 

We pride ourselves on caring for your items and doing our utmost to ensure they’re fully protected. However, there are some items you might want to consider moving, especially those that are priceless and irreplaceable such as family heirlooms. 

It’s important to talk to your customer service representative during the in-home estimate to determine if there are special considerations that the movers should be aware of or if there are certain items that we recommend you move in your private vehicle.

4 Tips for Helping Your Elderly Parents Move

One of the hardest parts of life is watching your parents get older and less able to care for themselves. As the years go on, we are made to watch those vibrant people from our childhood and youth lose their health and relocate either to a smaller home or an assisted living facility. 

The move itself can also be problematic and stressful, just as a regular move can be. But this time, it’s compounded by having to navigate your parents’ emotional state as they must leave the home they’ve probably lived in for years. 

Here are tips for how to help your elderly parents move into their new home:

1-Downsize carefully — One of the toughest aspects of the move for your parents will be trying to downsize their home. Most seniors have kept their home “just so” for years and are emotionally attached to the things they see each day. 

Many also keep mementos of the past and of their loved ones. But it may not be practical to get rid of everything just as it may not be practical to take it all to the new home. 

So, give yourself plenty of time to sit with your parents and reflect on each item deciding what to keep and what to do away with. Also, consider getting a storage unit so that your parents don’t have to feel like they are throwing all their cherished belongings away.

2-Hire a team of professional movers — Another thing that will go a long way to easing the move is hiring a team of professional movers. Obviously, your parents may not be able to handle moving any of the boxes or belongings that are going to their new home. But, it’s also important that they trust whoever is moving them. 3-Handle the medical side before the move — Obviously, health and medical concerns are of utmost importance with your elderly parents. Before they move, you need to help make sure that their health needs have been cared for. 

To that end, make sure that you have updated their new address with their insurance company and all their doctors. Have their prescriptions updated to go to a pharmacy closer to the new home? 

You may also want to see if you can have these filled so that they don’t have to worry about refills during the move itself. Also, make sure you have found them a new doctor in their area (especially if they are changing cities)

4-Make the new house feel like home — The best thing you can do is make this transition a smooth one. Your parents may be going into their first new home in decades. If possible, don’t let them move in until you have had time to set everything up. 

Plan out where they want things to go and then have the movers place these exactly as they wish. When they move in, have personal pictures and mementos placed around the home to remind them as much as possible of the old home. Also, as you set up furniture, make sure the locations are safe with plenty of wide spaces to prevent trips and falls.

Use your apps — It’s 2022, so be sure to take advantage of all the technology that you can. Be sure to ask if your realtor/real estate agent can offer online tours of the property. This is great if you’re moving long distance and it’s not practical to visit in-person or if you’re concerned about touring in-person because of COVID. 

Also, take advantage of any apps that help you track your boxes so that you can keep a digital list of all your packed items, making it easier to find items later.

Research your options — Speaking of the Internet and technology, now is the best time to start looking at researching your moving company. Look online to check out if a potential moving company has this list of red flags that might show you that a company isn’t the one for you.
