Look for other aspects other than space. For instance, if you plan to place a big screen TV along one wall, you’ll certainly need to know the dimensions. But, you will also need to know if there is a window along any of the other walls that may let in light that will cast a glare on the TV. This can be fixed with blinds or curtains, but it is something you need to take into consideration. Also, don’t feel that you have to use the same furniture set-up in your new home as you had at the old house. Some pieces may work better in a different room. 5 Tips for Speedy Packing

Trying to get packed up for a move is hard enough, but when you’re trying to do it in a hurry it can be extra stressful. Whatever the reason for the quick move, it’s essential that you still get everything packed carefully so your belongings are safe and secure. 

Here are a few tips and guidelines to make sure you handle packing for your move as efficiently as possible:

  1. Leave it to the pros — One of the easiest ways to ensure your packing is handled quickly and safely is to hire a professional moving team. Movers do this for a living and know how to get in, get you packed up, and get you on your way as quickly as possible. If you can, give serious consideration to hiring pros to pack you up.
  2. Don’t pack everything — This may seem counterintuitive, but one of the best tips we can give you is to reduce the amount of packing you have to do. To do this, you need to do a fast spring cleaning of all your belongings. Throw out anything you don’t need or want. If possible, donate it to a local charity so you’re reducing the amount that you have to pack. This is especially true when it comes to the kitchen. There’s no point in packing up a lot of food items for transit. Donate the unopened items to your local food pantry. Toss the opened items out and start fresh when you move into your new location.
  3. Pack an essentials bag — Before you start packing your other belongings, put together an essentials bag. This will include all the things you can’t live without for a few days. For instance, you’ll definitely want a couple of days’ clothing as well as your medicines and toiletries that you will need. Also, throw in your chargers for items like your phone or laptop as well as any paperwork that you might need for the move. If you have kids, do the same for them and include a few favorite toys and a book or video to keep them occupied during the move.
  4. Don’t empty your drawers — If you have a large dresser, don’t empty out the drawers and try packing the individual items. Instead, just leave everything in the drawers and use them as makeshift packing boxes to carry the items to your new location. You can even cover these in packing cling wrap to help keep everything bundled together nicely.
  5. Don’t try to sort things out — Another big packing tip would be to not try to sort items when you’re boxing them up. The goal here is to just get everything into a box as quickly as possible. If you are trying to pack up a bedroom, for instance, just start putting everything into boxes. Don’t worry about sorting out whose clothes belong to who or putting some order or organization to the boxes. This is going to mean a little more work when you unpack and try to organize your new home, but it does mean you can get packed quicker in your old location. Also, as you pack these items, make sure you go room-by-room. If you bounce around from one room to another, you’re going to slow yourself down.

There are several different groups and people you need to talk with before you make the big move. Be sure that you consider the following:

  • School — First, if you’re a parent, talk with your child’s school. There may be paperwork you need to fill out to transfer your child to their new school.
  • Utilities — Make sure you have the utilities cut off in your old apartment or home and set up for your new location. This may require paying new deposits, but it’s important to get this set up. While you’re at it, don’t forget to transfer your Internet and cable TV service so you’ll have it ready when you arrive in your new home.
  • Doctor — Talk to your doctor and see if they have any recommendations for a new physician where you are moving. Also, make sure to get your prescriptions taken care of so you don’t run out of medicine a few days into your new home.
  • Post Office — Turn in a change of address form so your mail doesn’t pile up at the old house. Also, inform all your creditors and any subscriptions about the new address to make sure your mail gets to you.

Whether you’re moving a block away or across town, there’s still a lot of preparation and planning necessary to make a move go smoothly. One of the best ways to organize yourself is with a moving checklist. 

Not only will it give you an idea of “what’s next” when you feel overwhelmed, but it will also help you to feel a sense of accomplishment as you check off your “To Do” items. 

Here are items you need to have on your checklist if you plan to move across town:

  1. Clean out the house — First, start by cleaning your house and getting everything organized. Throw out anything you don’t need or donate it to a local charity. But the idea here is to not only clean but also reduce the amount of stuff you must move. The less you move, the cheaper and easier your move will be. 
  2. Set your budget — Once you’ve got things as cleared out as possible, begin to estimate your budget. Remember that large items (like a piano or oversized furniture) will cost you more to move.
  3. Research the moving companies — Don’t try to throw out your back or stress yourself out with moving yourself. A professional company can really make the difference between a good move and a nightmare. Instead, spend some time researching your options. Get quotes from multiple companies with a long history of moving with a good reputation and compare their price points and options.
  4. Schedule your move — Now that you’ve got your moving company picked out, be sure to schedule the date of your move. Once you have this information, begin the countdown until moving day.
  5. Get your supplies — Check with your moving company to get supplies for the packing process. You will want to store up on heavy-duty boxes and packing tape as well as paddings such as bubble wrap or Styrofoam “peanuts.” If you’re having them pack, you can “forget about it”!
  6. Begin packing — If you’re planning to pack your own belongings for the move and just have the movers relocate them, then now is the time to start packing and labeling boxes. Make sure you label them like this “Kitchen 1 of _____.” Then, when you finish packing, count your boxes and write that total on each box so you can quickly count and make sure that everything arrives at your new home.
  7. Label your electronic connectors — Take pictures and clearly label all your electronics and their accompanying cords and cables. That will make it easier to set them all up when you unpack them in your new home.
  8. Plan out your new home — Plan on where you want to put all your belongings when you move into your new home. Layout in your mind where each piece of furniture should be placed so you can quickly inform the movers when they arrive. The longer you keep them moving around your furniture and other items, the more your bill is likely to be.
  9. Switch over the utilities — Get the power and water (and cable/internet) shut down in your old home and switched over to your new home.

How to Estimate Your 2021 Moving Costs

 

If you’ve ever talked to a friend or family member and told them that you plan to move, chances are you’ve probably gotten A LOT of unsolicited advice. It seems that it’s a topic on which everyone has an opinion, even if it may not be wholly accurate. 

One of the things that we’ve found over the years is how little people know about how to properly budget for a move. It’s a little more complex than one might think and there are a lot of different factors that go into determining your total moving costs. 

Here are items you need to consider when you budget for your move:

  1. Estimate your “stuff” — The biggest determining factor for cost will be just how much you’re having moved. You can do this by hand if you want, going room by room and estimating how many boxes you think it will take for the small things. Then include how many large pieces (beds, washer, dryers, dressers, etc.) that you plan to move.  

A better move would be to use a moving cost calculator app that can help you estimate exactly how much you plan to move. Once you have an idea, talk with your professional movers about their rates. Some will charge by weight and others by the hour. Either way, the amount of “stuff” you plan to move will determine a large part of the cost.

2. Determine the time of year — Time is also a huge factor in moving costs. If you move in the spring or summer, you’ll be paying “prime” rates. However, if you can hold off your move until the fall or winter (usually from September to late February/early March), then the rates are greatly reduced. This is because more people want to move when the weather is nicer, and the demand causes the rates to go up.

3. And figure out the time of the week — The day of your move can also impact your cost. If you want to move on the weekend, you’ll probably see a slight increase because of a higher demand for professional movers and vans. But if you can take some time off from work in the middle of the week, you can save yourself a few dollars. (And those add up!)

4. Other factors — There are several other aspects that you should consider when budgeting your move. All of these will potentially impact the cost:

  • Distance from your old home to your new (especially if your new home is in another city or province).
  • If the movers have to take apart a bunch of furniture or other items, then this will add to the time it takes (and the total bill).
  • Optional add-ons such as additional insurance will raise the cost of your move.

In Canada, it’s hard to pin down an average cost for a move. A small apartment may only take as little as $750 while a large home can cost upwards of $2500. It’s important to talk with your movers, get a quote upfront, and look closely at your contract to help determine the budget for your move.

How to Spot Red Flags When Considering Moving Companies

As anyone who has dealt with a company can attest, there is a big difference between those who claim to be “professional” and those who are. The same is true for professional moving companies. 

Most of these businesses are qualified movers who take their work seriously and are in this to help customers with their expertise. However, there are some who will ruin the reputation of the field for everyone else with their unprofessional behavior.

How to Spot Red Flags When Considering Moving Companies

Here are red flags you need to be on the lookout for when determining if the company you are considering is a group of qualified professionals or a fly-by-night operation that will take you for a ride.

  1. They just give you a number over the phone — Be very careful of a company that just offers a “flat rate” for all moves. Any good moving company will tell you that each move is different with its own special considerations. To accommodate this, a truly professional company will insist on a site inspection/evaluation before they give you a quote on how much it will cost to move you. If a company doesn’t want to know what you are asking them to move, then the alarm bells should start going off.

  2. They don’t have a professional office — Not only should the movers come to inspect your home, but you should also be able to visit their offices. If all you have is a PO Box and a phone number, you have no way of finding them if something happens to your belongings. Many fly-by-night businesses are just a couple of guys with a pickup truck operating out of their home. Don’t trust them.

  3. They give you a blank contract (or no contract at all) — Another thing you need when you are hiring a moving company is a comprehensive contract that covers as much detail as possible. A good contract should cover the costs, mover’s responsibilities, customer’s responsibilities, and the anticipated time frame for the move. If a company doesn’t offer you something like that (or if the contract they give you doesn’t have specifics), then you have no legal recourse if they try to change the terms of the move. (This would include trying to jack up the price when the movers arrive.)

  4. They won’t give you information about their insurance — A big issue with “bad” movers is that they don’t carry the required insurance that will help replace your belongings if they are lost or damaged by the company. If a moving company doesn’t give you a copy of the insurance paperwork, then you can bet that your valuables aren’t covered. Don’t just take their word for it.

  5. They don’t have their own professional vehicles — As we’ve said, sometimes an unprofessional moving company will just show up with a pickup truck and say they are there to move you. Other times, they may arrive in a rental van from another company. In this case, they have literally rented a van for your move! Instead, you want to find a company with its own fleet of branded vehicles so that you know exactly who is moving you. A reputable business will have special moving vans equipped to carefully move your items.

No one wants to trust their precious valuables to just anyone. This is not only your furniture or clothes—it’s also family heirlooms and breakables that can’t be replaced. Tips for Moving with Roommates

Every fall, thousands of university students across the country begin to move in with complete strangers who will become their roommates. For others, they may be moving out of one location with a roommate and moving into another with a different roomie. 

In doing this, it’s important to make sure that you have a plan going into the move. Any move can be complicated, but when you are moving out of a home after sharing the living space with someone else, it can be even more complex. 

Here are tips for how to handle the move without losing your sanity:

  1. Make a List and Check It Twice — The first thing that you need to do is get organized. Make a list of everything you’ll need to do to get packed and moved. One of those items should be listing out all your belongings (or as many as you can). Then, talk to your new roommate to decide if you need to bring those items. If you’re living in a dorm, or moving into a rental with your roommate, you both don’t need a microwave and your own refrigerator, especially since space is limited.

  2. Start Early — This is an issue that many people don’t take care of as they should. No one likes to move. Because of this, a lot of people hold off on the logistics of moving until the last minute. (This is especially true for students who have made a habit out of procrastinating.) Don’t do that! Start early making your plans and packing up your stuff. This way, you won’t be working until 4 in the morning the night before the move.

  3. Hire a Professional Moving Company — As with any move, one of the biggest things you can do is hire professional movers. Don’t put a strain on yourself and your relationship with your new roomie trying to pack things up and move them yourselves. Instead, let the pros come in and move you with ease.   4. Communicate Clearly About Bills — It is important to always keep open the lines of communication with your roommate. This is especially true as you move. Who will be responsible for paying the deposits and having the utility in their name? All these need to be decided before you move in.

If possible, take them to visit the new house and see what it will be like. Find anything you can to feel positive about. For instance, let them know if they have a bigger room in the new house or if the new house is closer to a park or playground. 

Finally, make sure they know that the move doesn’t mean they have to leave their friends behind. Tell them they can visit sometimes or (if the move is a distant one) still communicate by phone or email.

You may want to take pictures of your furniture before the move so you can feel confident when you unpack in your new home that all the furniture was packed with care and moved without any damage. 

Clean It  

Next, perform a deep cleaning on all of your outdoor furniture. If possible, throw your cushions and pillows into the washing machine to get rid of any traces of mold. 

Use soap and a good water sprayer/hose to clean off all of the furniture and larger items. As you do this, make sure you get rid of dirt and other trash that may have accumulated over time. 

Also, if you have furniture with hollow sections (such as tubing) make sure that you clear out any insects that may have decided to nest inside of them. You don’t want the movers picking up your outdoor chairs only to have a nest of wasps come flying out. 

Doing all of this not only keeps you and your movers safe, but it also means that you won’t be taking dirty items on the moving truck with you as these can get other items from inside the house dirty.

Break Down the Furniture (and other items too) 

If you’re paying professional movers according to how much space you use in the moving truck, you definitely want to pack everything as compactly as possible. For lawn furniture, take the items apart (as much as you can). To make it easier to reassemble the items later on, be sure to use heavy packing tape to tie them all together. 

Alternately, you can place everything (including the screws and bolts) into separate bags for easy assembly. Definitely don’t just throw it all together and hope it will make sense when you get to your new home. 

If you have a glass tabletop, wrap it in protective cushioning such as moving blankets. Lawn umbrellas should be closed and tied shut so that it doesn’t pop open in the truck. 

If you have lots of outdoor cushions and pillows (or other small items), you can save a lot of space with vacuum bags. Place the items inside of the bag and then use your vacuum cleaner to draw out the excess air. This makes it easier to stack the items up in the truck. 

Finally, if you have pool items (such as floats), pack these appropriately. Floats should be deflated, dried out, and then rolled up. (You can also use vacuum bags for this.) Pool chemicals should be packaged and properly labeled to prevent spills or leaks.
