When preparing for a move, organizing your possessions becomes essential to ensure an easier time finding things once you’re settled in. Items such as kitchen utensils, clothes, and electronics all require special considerations for safe packing. But what about your holiday decorations?
Typically, these cherished mementos and family keepsakes are stored in the attic until the holiday season arrives. However, it’s important to give them the same level of care and attention as your other belongings when packing.
Holiday decorations are very important when you consider that many of them are passed down from generation to generation. If a precious ornament from your grandparents is broken, then you probably won’t be able to find a replacement. You won’t be able to replace the memories that are attached to that individual item.
So how do you protect special ornaments?
One of the best ways to ensure the safety of your decorations throughout a move is to hire professional movers. These movers are trained in how to properly pack items and transport them so they won’t break.
If there is an accident, then you will be covered under their insurance coverage which can reimburse you for the loss. If you have a lot of large decorations that may not be heavy but are certainly bulky, then you might also want to talk to the pros who are used to handling such items.
Ask anyone what the worst thing about holiday decorations is, and we’re betting you’ll get the same answer: those annoying knots of Christmas tree lights. There are a couple of things we can recommend when packing holiday lights.
First, wrap the lights around a piece of cardboard or something similar so they don’t get jumbled into a ball. A good idea for this would be a light spool that you can get at a holiday store or a cardboard tube if you want to do things more DIY. Also, you can invest in cable ties (or even just old-fashioned bread ties) to keep the cords wrapped together in a nice loop.
As we just mentioned, many holiday shops not only sell ornaments and trees, but they also sell storage containers that can be a lifesaver. Besides selling spools that you can wrap your Christmas lights in, they also will have solid cases that you can store your wreaths in to prevent them from being crushed.
Finally, consider getting storage boxes, particularly cushioned if available, for your most precious ornaments. These will keep all your items in one place and make them easy to store so you can pack them for a move.
If you have a lot of wrapping paper and other paper products for the holidays, then you will want to keep all these together in a common storage box. Consider marking these as “fragile.”
No, they won’t break if the box is damaged. However, they can get wrinkled and torn, making them unusable. Instead, keep them in a separate box that is also waterproof (if possible) to prevent water damage that can ruin them.
We highly recommend two options when it comes to Christmas trees. First, if you have a classic artificial tree, buy a storage bag that you can place the tree inside with little to no problem. Most of these have a handle for easy carrying.
However, if possible, a live tree is a great option because you don’t have to store it afterwards and move it with you. Instead, you can recycle the tree when you’re done and not have to worry about packing it up at the end of the holidays (or if you plan to move during the holidays).
The holidays are a great time for traditions, and you want to continue those even when you move to a new home. Follow these suggestions so you can ensure that your holiday decorations survive your move and can be used for years to come.
